Video interview preparation guide
How to Improve Camera Presence in a Video Interview
Camera presence is mostly preparation: stable framing, reliable audio, and enough practice that your attention can stay on the question.
Frame for the conversation
- Place the camera at eye level or slightly above.
- Keep your eyes near the upper third of the frame.
- Use a plain background with enough contrast around your face.
- Remove notifications and close unrelated windows.
Test the two failure points
Record 30 seconds of audio to check level and echo, then review a short answer for framing, lighting, and distracting movement. Fix technical problems before rehearsing content.
Look at the camera when making a point
Looking directly at the camera can feel unnatural. Practice moving your eyes between the speaker’s face and the camera during transitions, especially at the opening and result of an answer.
Use pacing instead of performance
Slow down at the claim and result, pause briefly after follow-up questions, and keep gestures within the frame. The goal is attention and clarity, not constant eye contact.
